Australian Red Mallee Blanks

Bowl turning is a very popular way of using a lathe. Red mallee woods are extensively used as bowl blanks. It is scientifically known as Eucalyptus oleosa and E. Socialis. The major distribution of this tree is Australia. The appearance of heartwood of red mallee ranges from pink to orange-red. The color of sapwood ranges from pale yellow to Gray. So, it can be sharply demarcated from heartwood.

The trees in this species are mainly used for producing oil. Besides this, it is suitable for producing large amounts of biomass. Small specialty objects, knife and gun grips, and turned objects are also made by using these timbers. Usually, red mallee is smaller and shorter than trees. They will also have multiple smaller-diameter stems from the same root. Therefore, most of them are not suitable for lumber. But, they are used extensively for turning and other small specialty projects.

Some standard health risks are associated with all types of wood dust. Therefore, necessary protective measures should be adopted while working with Red mallee timbers. The prices of these timbers are par with the other solid wood products. This wood species is excluded from IUCN Red List or in the CITES Appendices.
